In this chapter, we are introduced to a number of characters and scenes. The action begins with the protagonist, Yon, trying to escape from the surveillance cameras. He is followed by the protagonist's friend, Zhengzhou, and Zhengzhou's wife, Valeria, who are also in the room. Yon tries to shoot Zhengzhou in the head, but Zhengzhou shoots him in the leg. Valeria tries to run away, but Yon shoots her in the back of the head. Zhengzhou tries to kill Zhengzhou with his gun, but the protagonist kills him anyway. He realizes that Zhengzhou has been infected with the plague, and that the rest of the lab staff has also been infected. The protagonist realizes that he cannot kill the other lab staff because they have all become monsters. He orders the guards to stand up and watch out, but they refuse to do so.
