About This Chapter
In this chapter, we find out about the fight that took place in San Francisco. We learn that the fight was fought in exchange for a year's stay away from the city. The narrator tells us that if the fight is lost, the demon will blame himself for everything that happens to him. He says that if he loses, he will be blamed for everything, and if he wins, then he will blame his own self for everything. He adds that the price of the bet would be that the business would have to turn over to him, or he would be forced to work for nothing. He tells us to be careful of the people who offer him the "easy way" of making his dreams come true. After all these years, he says, he has become "one of the world's best fighters" , even though he is not responsible for the lives of his friends and family. He reminds us that he was once paired up with him in a sparring match, and that they laughed and said they would not fight a girl.
