The chapter opens with a description of the outpost in the middle of the night. It's called the "kalayaan outpost" because it's on a street called "Kalayaan Avenue," which is the name of the street in the novel. The narrator tells us that the outpost doesn't have much to do with the plot of the book. The cemetery is home to over 50 families who live in make-shift shacks. One night, a woman named Berio Labra hears a noise and goes out to check on her husband. He's not home yet, but he's heard a strange noise. Berio's wife, Alexandra, is at the cemetery. She's been waiting for Berio for a long time. She asks Alexandra what's going on. Alexandra tells Alexandra that she's a crazy woman and that she should shut up. She says she'll beat her up if she won't let her go back in there. The captain says they're on their way back to the cemetery, but the path behind them isn't clear. They're going to have to find someone to take care of the cemetery for them. They don't know who to ask, but Alexandra thinks they'll find someone. She wants to know how the captain will explain all the graves they've found. He says he hasn't found any drawing implements, so he'll have to make sure that no one gets them.
