About This Chapter
In this chapter, we learn that the kami, or spirits of nature, created the veil of kami-gakushi, or magical veil, so that spirits and humans could no longer see each other and live as if they were separate worlds. One day, the nogo appeared, and the white protectors of the munemori tree were created to fight it. The protectors are the nobles known as the Onba and the warriors known as "senshi," and the names of their bloodlines are known to all kami. They live in the forests in harmony with one another. The Onba, who are the guardians of the sacred tree, are called "the nobles," while the warriors, who live on the other side of the forest as "the prouds," are called the senshi. The onba, the protectors, are the ones who have fought against the nogs, and they have defeated them once more. The noggo has infected the sacred trees, and from now on, the future of the warriors is uncertain. They ask the onba to bring them offerings of sap and fresh light. They also ask that the flesh of their brother, Kenta, who has been killed in battle, be given to them. The senshi and onba will feed the roots of the trees that give them life, and Kenta's flesh will remain invisible to them until the day he returns to them, like his brother.
