This chapter opens with a description of a severe winter that has struck the area. The narrator tells us that the people of the area think that this is due to Lady Kaga's incompetence, and that a council meeting will be held in ten days to choose a new leader for the territory. He tells the audience that it took him time to convince the opposing faction to agree to a change in the leader, but that it is now time for him to tell the story of his mother's birth. He explains that he was born from her wretchedness and that she is now his mother. He asks her how she came to be in Cydonia, and she tells him that she was taken in by marquis after she lost her baby. She says that marquis took her in after he lost his baby and that he is now using her for his wicked plot. She tells her that she heard about the plot between marquis and muster and that they will kill her and erica if they take over Cydonia. She asks her mother to prepare for the worst, since she has nowhere else to turn. She also tells her mother that they need to follow marquis to the wall.
