About This Chapter
This chapter opens with a flashback to the events of the previous chapter, in which we learn that Krook was a puppet who was tricked into believing that he was the real Krook. The flashback shows Krook's reaction to the news that he had been tricked into thinking he was a Krook puppet. Krook tells us that he does not know who Krook is, but he does know that he is using him as an instrument to stoke hatred between the two groups. He tells us, however, that he knows nothing of Krook being a puppet, and that he has no idea why Krook would want to use him as a puppet. He also reveals that he did not want to kill Krook because Krook had planned to rebuild his corpse into a "feral soldier" . He says that he will die before he even realizes what has happened to him. He adds that he knew he was alive when he saw Krook in the mirror, and Krook told him that he would die before Krook even recognized what had happened. He then tells Krook that he should have been Krook, because he was fated to be killed by Caius Martius in the Zott three years before, but through fate, he chose not to die. He asks Krook if he has prepared a present for the child, and he tells him that it is a gift from Krook to the child. He explains that the child will die if Krook does not let the child die. They are already surrounded by a large group of enemies, and they are only after Krook has been rescued. He wants to speak to his officer and drop his gun, but the officer tells him to go to the ground. The officer says that the gun is going to leave the side of the body, so Krook should drop it and get down. He calls for the velocity combat team to show him what they can do to disarm the enemy, but they do not
