The protagonist tells us that he wishes he were in the same school as the teacher, who has 40 years of experience in the art of drawing, and who has won many awards for his work. He says that he has submitted his work only three times in the past year, but that the best of his awards has been a "special choice" . He asks the teacher if he can give advice to a straight face, and the teacher replies that it is better to base a drawing on a real model than to base it on a mental image. He also says that a pro artist's struggles are constant, and he will have to stop the protagonist from taking the wrong path.
