About This Chapter
The next morning, the two men go to the northern garrison to inspect the garrison. When they get there, they find that the new commander, Lingyin, has been hard at work, punishing his men for their disobedience and for drinking too much. The two men decide to have lunch together, and Lingyin tells the chief that he has been feeling sluggish lately, and that he wishes he could go for a stroll with him. The chief tells him that he feels sorry for the man whenever he sees him running around, and asks him not to let himself be deceived by Lingyin. He then asks the chief if there is some evil spirit in his office, and the chief says that he is not afraid, but that getting along with the new boss is even more difficult than fighting in a battle. He says that the boss whipped dozens of his men the next day, and fired the few who tried to defy him. He also invited the chief to lunch, but the chief was so cold that he did not speak to him.
