The chapter opens with a flashback to the night before, when Bing and Bing's daughter, Ming-ze, was admitted to the hospital with a serious case of pneumonia. When she was admitted, her father asked her to stay home, but she refused, saying that she was sick and would not be able to go to the concert that night. When her father found out that she had been admitted, he yelled at her and grabbed her by the collar, demanding to know what had happened to her. When the doctor told her that she would have to go home, she said that she did not want to be responsible for something that had happened that day, and that it was her own choice to honor her father's wishes. The doctor said that her choice was hers and that he would support her in giving up her life. The chapter ends with a description of the backstage scuffle between Bing and Ming-Zeng, in which Bing accuses Ming-Ze of being a selfish, self-centered person who does not understand the seriousness of the situation.
