The scene opens with a flashback to the beginning of the previous chapter, when the narrator explains that he wanted to see the young man because he was addicted to him. The narrator asks if what he heard was true, and if it was just words of love and affection. The two men are finally back at square one, and the narrator wants to know if they can have dinner together. He asks if he can hate him or fear him if that makes him comfortable. The young man says he has something to say, but he doesn't know if he means it with his heart or with his words. He tries to push the issue by saying that they are different species with different backgrounds and everything. He is afraid that he misunderstood what he said, and that he might not have meant what he meant. He says that he was attracted to him from the beginning even though they were different species, and he wanted him to know how he felt even if he did not love him back.
