This scene opens with a flashback to the beginning of the novel. It is a scene in which a young man named Whitey tries to convince his older brother, Blackie, to give him the bait he has made for him. Whitey tells his brother that the bait is made from the body of a human, and that he will die if he does not give it to Blackie. When Whitey asks what he should do, he is told that he should give the bait to his brother, who will then find a beautiful woman to serve as Whitey's partner.
