This chapter opens with a flashback to the beginning of the novel, when the Governess is in the library with her governess. The Governess asks the governess why she is always running into her, and the governess tells her that it must be "fate" that she always runs into her. She also tells her not to hide from her, because she already has a magic wand, and that she should not enter the library because the library closes at 5:00 p.m.
