Only women under 30 years old can learn to use magic. The narrator is glad that she is a girl, because her mother told her that she cannot use magic until she turns 30. The dorm map leads the narrator to the cafeteria hall, where he and his sister, a student named lin yi, will live together. The two girls are excited to meet each other, since they are both from the same village. They are both wearing school uniforms, and the narrator has to take off his school clothes before he can transform into a student.
