About This Chapter
In this short scene, Rasu rumbles with his guard dog, who is accompanying him on his first trip to the Hawaiian island of Oahu. Rasu tells the dog that he's going to have his partner do the smooching for him. He's not mad at the dog, he just wants to make sure that the dog doesn't get too close to him. The two of them have been playing together for a while now, and Rasu says that he just re-membered what happened in the day before. He says that his grandfather's house is near the sea, and he gave it to an older boy who was playing with him. It was a toy, of course, but he wanted to be with the boy even when he grew up. He wants to give the boy an engagement ring, which is a fancy piece of jewelry that men wear to signify their love for one another. The ring is a symbol of love, and it's supposed to be given to someone who is truly in love with the other. But Rasu knows that the older boy won't be taken seriously because he was a boy, so he gives the ring to the boy. He tells the boy that he really does love the boy, and that he will never let him go of him, even if the boy gets hurt. He asks the dog to go back to his hotel, but the dog says he'll have to sleep. He wonders why men wear rings when they get married, and why women wear rings, when they want a "shape of love" . But, he says, he can tell that he is loved by the dog.
