In this chapter, we learn that the photo of the young man and the girl was taken in the office of the firm where the young men work. The young man wonders who took the photo and how he can know that the girl is in love with him. He also learns that the young woman has resigned from the firm and that she is now waiting for a checkmate. He is worried about her and decides to help her.
