The narrator tells us that the year is 14 and that it's been a while since he's seen his old friend, the naughty boy, "oldjiang ziye" . He's now a junior in high school, and he and his friend are both obsessed with writing and reading novels. The narrator compares this girl, named xia jie, to a little girl who's obsessed with novels and secretly writes. She's the best student in the class, the narrator says, because she's fluent in style, logical quotations, and diction, and she doesn't waste any time on homework. She also writes a novel, rather than a narrative, and the narrator thinks that this is the best thing that's happened to her class in a long time.
