The narrator tells us that he expects that Cyril is going to be faster than he is, but that he's not even close to him. Cyril tries to catch up, but the narrator reminds him that he was in the hospital, and Cyril can't remember what he was doing there. The narrator is glad that he did this for her, because she's so glad that they're classmates.
