This chapter opens with a flashback to the previous chapter, in which we learn that Su Qian has asked his fiancee to report that the two of them have broken off their relationship and that they have prevented him from getting a promotion in the army. The flashback reveals that the couple's father, a general, is a member of the army, so the report came from his father, who is also a general. The report also reveals that he is not popular among the generals, and that he has retired from the army before he was selected for a promotion. He tells us that he signed up for the army because he didn't want to be associated with the general's family. He says that his chances of getting selected are low, but that he was surprised to find out that he had been selected for the special forces because he was not popular. He explains that his fiancee and his father are not willing to break up their marriage, so they teamed up and tried to get him out of the military. He adds that it is easier for him, since he is a "victim of collateral damage" , to be intimate with someone who is out of favor with them. He then tells us about the bet he is making with Su Qian: if he loses to Su Qian, he will beat him until he regrets knowing him. Su Qian tells him that he knows that he treats Su Qian well, but Su Qian says that he doesn't care if Su Qian treats him well or not. He also tells Su Qian that if he and Su Qian get back together, it will be like planting a tree between two people, just like if you and a tree grow up to be taller than the tree that is dug out
