About This Chapter
In this short scene, the Governess tells her son-in-law that she is building a garden inside the garden. The Governess asks him to imagine what the garden might look like, and he replies that he has hoped that the storm would echo across the valley and wash away the sins of the people. He tells her that the door to the garden is never closed, and that he had hoped that he would not see him again. He says that he is not about violence in the garden, but he has done his part. He wants to know what has happened to his niece. He asks for absolution for anyone who has shared the blame for her death. He also asks for the last address he has for his dead father. He adds that he will travel with him, but that the company of his kind has not been a comfort to him.
