About This Chapter
"Pretty from re yes, the lamb" is the first line of dialogue in this chapter. It's about a shepherd who's lost his flock, and the shepherd asks the shepherd if he's a good gardener. The shepherd replies that he isn't, and that people die, and he asks if the difference between the two is that "people die, conjure, man" . The gardener replies that the difference is that he is the "child of death" and the "reveer of vengeance" , which is why he has to leave his duties. He tells the shepherd that he'll give him three days to return to his duties, and then he has an errand of his own. We learn that the director Clara admired Jack kaufman, and she took a job as a concessionary at a picturehouse to see his work. Jack was out of the picture business by the time Clara landed in Los Angeles, but she wanted to be like him, so she took the job at the concessionary. Jack didn't have a hit for a year, and Clara wanted to grow and be like Jack. The director tells the story of how he was threatened by the studio to sell his entire operation, but the studio wouldn't let him do it, so he offered Clara a deal. She agreed to help him with his latest film, which was a big hit. The studio wanted a third of the deal, but Clara died, and her soul never made it to the garden.
