About This Chapter
In this short scene, we learn the story of how ginny came to be a prostitute. The story begins when a mason took a girl he loved for his bride and turned her into a "toy to tease" before "covetous men" overcome with fear that he would lose her. He built her a "prison of stone" where she would "die from despair" if he put her in it. The narrator tells us that the mason's plan was to make her "a toy to tease," but when he realized that she would not be able to resist the temptation, he made her into "a prison of stone." The narrator thanks the mason for his kindness and says that he will pray for him. He tells the girl that he has "something for you" and asks her to "show yourselves." The girl tells him that she has been looking for a "ginny" named Johnny and that if he does not show himself, she will be infected with the "flesh wound" and will die. She says that if she does not appear, Johnny will kill her. The girl says that Johnny has "lifted it off" of the "ginger back in town" and that they have "waw so fast" that they "ride like fire" across a prairie. She tells the girls that she will stay with them and that she is sure that they will be all right.
