About This Chapter
In this short scene, the two men discuss the events of the previous night. The first is concerned that the girl is afraid of the dead, and the second is concerned about her own conscience. He tells her that he was shot for his trouble, and that she burned up the binder containing the information he had given her. He asks her to tell him the truth, and she does, telling him that she has a fever dream. He then asks her if she fears the dead. She says she does not, and he asks her what she means to kill. She tells him that the mason intended to dig a grave for her, but the water in the river made it impossible. She asks him if he is not the father of the girl. He replies that he is, and they will trouble her no longer if she is not her father. He says that the river will create a beast when a woman grieves there, and when she weeps, it will rise up from the water and give birth to a thousand "violent deaths." He asks if he will be able to give him the girl when his time comes. She replies that she deserves no better than that, and after a long and happy life, he will see her again
