About This Chapter
In this short scene, the dancers discuss the "fairy tale" of a farmer who has only one horse and his neighbor who has many congratulations on his good fortune. One day, his horse runs off into the mountains, and the neighbor's luck is so great that he breaks his leg. The farmer is allowed to stay and fight in the war because his leg was broken. The dance partner, the cowboy, is left alone with the girl, and he asks her to dance with him. She refuses, saying that she respects the cycle of life and that she will replace him if he loses his form. She tells him that he is a "bastard three" for every life he has put between them. He tells her that he will have his vengeance on her for every "life" she puts between him and her, and that there will be more war between them than the last. He says that he means to never see her again, and she tells him to stop talking. She says that she is losing her form and that her mind is also losing her mind. She asks him to go to the garden, but he refuses.
