This chapter opens with a flashback to the events of the previous chapter, in which Lin learns that the painting was stolen and that the company is in financial trouble. Lin is furious, but he is comforted by the fact that he has recorded Lin's words and the terms of the contract. He decides to write Lin a check for forty million dollars.
