About This Chapter
In this short scene, we learn that we're back in the present, where we last left off. It's the day before Valentine's Day, which means that we can't really tell what's going on in the past, but we do know that it's been a long time since we've heard anything from Valentine. He's not really sure what he's talking about, but he does know that he has to get ready for his big night of music. He tells us that he'll be driving all over the place, and that he doesn't want to go back to his mom for anything. He wants to make sure that his "man" has a recording contract signed in his pocket, so he can impress him with all of the songs that his mom wrote for him. He also wants to impress his "woman" with the money she hid in her mom's "secret stash" of money. Valentine is all, "Hey, I was wondering, can they fly?" . He says that men get a lot of money when they play the game of baseball, and women get a little bit of it when they hide their stash. Valentine says that he spotted his mom hiding her stash once, and he was wondering why men don't just fly over fences when they're playing the game. He adds that men are just like chickens, just like women, and if they want to free themselves or hold them down, they need to be careful who they choose to marry. Valentine reminds us that the job isn't over until the recording contract is signed. If he wants to get the money, he needs to sign the contract with his "lucky pen" , which is a pen that's supposed to "clear my head" when chickens fly. Valentine explains that he took a walk
