About This Chapter
"The Self" is a song about self-destructive behavior. It's about a guy named Mac who's addicted to alcohol. Mac says he's been doing this for a long time, but now he thinks it's time to stop. He tells us that he used to be a successful musician, but then he got hooked on music and made a lot of money. He's going to get Mac to sign a contract with a pen and paper, so that Mac can use the pen as a torture device to learn from his mistakes in life. Mac is going to have Mac sign the contract with the pen, but first, he wants to know what's up with Smalley. Smalley's a cheater, he says, but he and Mac are "perfect for each other" . Mac tells Smalley to take a home run ball and hit it. He says he took the ball so he could hit that he was going to give to Smalley, but Smalley didn't take the ball, and then he abandoned him. Mac doesn't care what Smalley thinks of him, though, because they're both cheaters. He gives Smalley a song to sing to him, and tells him to give it a shot.
