In this chapter, we learn that the ancient jinns ruled over the land long ago, preying on humans and other small ghosts. One day, a man named Nyoman used to be head of a psychic community, and he ordered his followers to kill his rivals with "santet" . Nyoman's wife, known as "kuyang," is said to like to "suck blood" of pregnant women and newly-born babies. When Nyoman refused to accept the job, his wife told him that he needed the money to pay for the job. When he found out that his wife was pregnant, he went to her and told her that he couldn't accept such a job because he was afraid that she would kill him. She agreed to the job and one day, she and her husband were on their way to Jakarta to visit her.
