About This Chapter
In this first part of the story, Rouncewell explains that he will be the first person to use the flying carriage caller's spell. He explains that the spell means that he can use a mosque's mortuary carriage to summon a dead body. He also explains that if he sees the dead body, he will hurt him again. He then goes on to explain that he needs to know what is going on between him and Watu. He tells Watu that they are at the haunted house, where Nyavi has been hiding. He says he can sense Watu's presence and that he thinks he can defeat him by using the big ghost. Watu tells him that he cannot harm Nyavi because she has been tied to the house for two years and has gone out of it. The real Nyavi cannot escape, he says, because she is the duplicate of the dead Nyavi. He points out that if the house were destroyed, the spell would be broken and Nyavi would no longer be able to summon her ghost. The ghost of Nyavi is seen beside him, and he says that he has stolen her genderuwo.
