About This Chapter
The narrator and his companion Hiroshi arrive in India. Hiroshi has just been admitted to a hospital for bathing. He and Hiroshi are looking for a tour guide. The narrator tells Hiroshi to come with him and he'll find them a good tour. The two of them go for a walk. As they walk, Hiroshi notices that there are many cows in the city. He shrieks at the sight of strays, and his head feels split in two. He wonders why there are so many cows, squelching some of them and allowing others to roam free. He's afraid that the city is going to split into two, and he wonders how he can get to the nearest hotel. He decides to take a boat ride to see the sights, but he's worried that the guide will be suspicious of them. He offers to take them anywhere he likes, and the narrator is glad that he can do so. He tells the narrator that he should never forget the city's hustle and bustle. He wants to go to the opposite riverbank and see the fruit. He also wants to visit the white sand, which he thinks is the last place he should visit.
