In this chapter, we learn that Dr. Sejic was kidnapped a few weeks ago in Montreal from a talk he was giving about "locked in syndrome" and using his "surface thought reader" to help him communicate with those who are unable to communicate with others because of their physical or mental limitations. We learn that the chip he was using was offline outside of the Russian city of Kharisova for some time.
