About This Chapter
The chapter opens with a review of the events of the previous day. The narrator laments the fact that he is not conscious of his own existence. He compares himself to a "shameless man" who would be ashamed of himself if he died. He laments that he has been shamed by his fellow human beings. He bemoans that no one would blame him if he were to die. He notes that the story he has read is full of prejudices. He feels that it is "clearly unfinished" and that there is nothing in it that would make him the author. He wonders if he is okay with the story. The chapter ends with a discussion of the gardening club and the conversation between sensei and Hiroshi. Hiroshi tells the narrator not to step on the flowerbed and to push a "big fan" that petty things like "dating" would be obliterated if they so much as suggested splitting the check. He says that men are such idiots and that he feels sorry for the women who fall for men who do not come to get her. He reminds the narrator that he was gardening when he was a first year student and that part of the reason he fell for Hiroshi was because he was working hard during the break. He asks the narrator if he has forgotten the incident from pre-school and the narrator says that he does not. He also says that Hiroshi is a good teacher and should not hesitate to be fair to his students. He urges the narrator to push "a big fan" of that petty thing that women call "move" and to "push a big fan that " petty thing" would "utterly obliterated" if we so
