About This Chapter
In this chapter, the narrator continues his discussion of women's insecurities and how they can be used to gain friends and influence others. He tells us that some of his insecurities stem from the fact that he's always been disliked by other girls at school because of his "embarrassment" . This is why he wants to be friends with a girl like Aizuma. Azuma tells the narrator that she's noticed that the two of them are really close at school and that she admires how close they are to each other. The narrator tells her that he doesn't think she'll be able to do anything about it at school, because other girls will hate her for being so close to such a high-class girl. He asks if she has a traumatic history, and she tells him that she probably has one, because she didn't say anything to him when he asked her about it. This leads the narrator to wonder why he can't do something like this at school. He wonders if it's because of something that happened to her when she was younger, or because she was afraid of what other girls would think of her. He then asks if there's anything he can do to clear things up at home, and the narrator tells him he'll have to wait until the train arrives at the station.
