In this chapter, the narrator reflects on the horrible things that have happened to his son. He realizes that he has done terrible things, and that human beings should never do such things as their parents have done. He feels terribly sorry for his son, but he doesn't know how to begin to repay the people who have been injured by his father's actions. The narrator is interrupted by a series of anonymous voices who comment on how awful it is that his son has done such terrible things. They also comment that his parents are also guilty of the same thing, and they feel sorry for their son's mother, who looks just like her son. The anonymous voices also comment on the fact that they haven't spoken to his father, who is late coming home from work. They wonder if his mother has run away, and the narrator wonders if she has abandoned her home at some point during the night.
