About This Chapter
The chapter opens with a discussion of the march of the hare around the castle of the White Queen. The narrator asks if the hare is full of salt, worms, and worms' urine. He tells us that his mother taught him how to make all sorts of potions and cures. He also tells us about his sister, who is studying dominion over living things. He says that his sister's head is "bloofed like a blimp" and that she is "perfectly horrid" . He adds that he thinks her brain is "pressing on her brain" , and that when she appears to be a champion, the people of the castle will rise up against her. He gives us three coins from his dead father's pocket and two tablespoons of his "wishful thinking" and says that he doesn't think he can imagine what's going on in the castle. Alice has escaped with the "vorpal sword" and is joined by the "hatter" and a "dormouse." He tells the narrator that he may have underestimated the queen, but he's sure that the queen's conspirators are behind her escape. He asks if he can spare his own life, and the narrator replies that he won't, since his head is coming off at dawn. He goes on to say that he has always admired the hat that the red queen had given him, and he'd like to give it to him now that he'll no longer be needing it. He then asks the narrator if he should leave the hat to him, since it's so sad that he can't wear it anymore. He'll wear it as long as he can get at his neck, he says, and then he will be right behind him. He looks at the hatter's nose and thinks that he should be ashamed of himself for being a fool.
