In this chapter, we learn that Charles has lost all sense of time. He has lost the ability to think clearly. He is afraid that he has fallen into a bad dream and that he will wake up in the middle of the night. We learn that the best people in the world can have bad dreams and that if they get too frightened, they can wake up the next day. We also learn that Anne has had bad dreams in the past and that they are always the same since she can remember them. Anne tells us that she is pleased that she has bought the company because she was a fool to not invest in the venture when she had the chance. She also tells her that Anne's mother knows that Anne and Hamish have been swimming naked in the pond. Anne says that she would like to know if Anne wants to marry Hamish and that she does not want to burden her mother with her love. She says that Anne will be happy as she is with Lowell and her life will be perfectly perfect
