In this short scene, the young narrator tries to convince himself that he is doing the right thing by thrusting his arms in the air in order to win Imogen's hand. He does not want her to know that he has done such a thing, for she would think he is flirting with another woman. He also wants her to be aware that she is risking her life to win her hand.
