In this chapter, we learn that the girl who gave the ointment to flower is none other than the girl's sister , chengsiyan. The girl is afraid that she will be punished for her role in the ointment incident. She is also afraid that her actions will be seen as being part of a plot against her. She tells the story of how she was forced to take the defective ointment away from a trash can in order to pass an internal exam at the school. She also tells us that she was asked to give the ointment away to zhuqiao in a tea room after the exam, and she was told that if she did not do so, her actions would be made public. She feels that she is being watched, and that she has been directed by someone.
