This chapter opens with the sound of a car's horn. It's not a car, it's an officer's whistle. The whistle is a warning to the officers that something is amiss. The officer is worried that the whistle might be a signal to the other officers to come and rescue him. He's also worried that if the whistle is blown, he'll be unable to get out of the room. He tries to get the officer to let him in, but the officer won't let him into the room, even though he's been instructed to do so by the officer who saved him.
