Lanyao wakes up in the middle of the night to find that someone has been killed by a "squirrel" . He's not sure if it was a wolf or a tiger, but he's sure that the culprit is "an evil spirit" , which is why the culprit can't be a human being. He asks the two women to come with him to fetch some oil from the west gate.
