In this short scene, we learn that the young woman who was saved from drowning is none other than Chen Tongxue, the son of a high-ranking official. She is the daughter of a former general who was executed for treason by the emperor. The young woman tells us that her father was once a general, and that she and her mother were enslaved when she was 7 years old. Her mother would always tell her that she was not a traitor, and so she had to go to the herb court to be trained as a servant.
