In this chapter, we are introduced to the Governess's daughter, Sarah, who has been locked up in a mental institution for the past 15 years. The Governess tells us that she and her sister have not done anything wrong, and that they are being held captive because they are "like you" . She tells Sarah that the voice in the room is telling her the truth, and she wonders if there is a cure for the disease. She wonders if the voice is telling the truth because she does not want to be a monster. She asks Sarah to go to the doctor's office and find out what is going on. Sarah tells her that she has been attacked by some monsters, and they have been killing them ever since.
