About This Chapter
In this chapter, the Underground Man explains that he has nine different kinds of super-intelligence . He says that he is in the "rizona desert" , but that he does not know if he is with the "queen of the desert" or with "the red tail" . The Underground Man says that the water in the river is from the body of the "Queen of the Desert" and that they are clearly working together. He wonders if they are using the water to heal people and not call the police. He also says that there is no way to hide the smoke from the fire if he has lit it. He explains that the river has high levels of dissolved metals, like iron, which can lead to long-term illness and premature aging. He adds that the underground community is mostly latino, some black, and some white, and that the lead in the water is a problem for them because they do not have enough money to pay for clean water. They have to help the people, he says, but they do it not enough. They are testing the water for lead, and he says that black civilians are more likely to be shot by the police than white civilians. He concludes by saying that it is hard to believe that there are other people with abilities like his. He tells us that he escaped the prison, learned how to purify water, and became a water keeper.
