About This Chapter
The narrator tells the audience that he's just trying to figure out why his father has cut his salary. He doesn't have a lot of money, he says, so he'll go out and buy himself some food. He's not sure how to cook, but he knows how to make things like steak and pasta. He hopes that the food will make the narrator feel better. The narrator says he hopes the food makes the narrator smile. He also says that his father pays attention to the fact that the narrator is smiling, and that's why he always tries to impress him. He says that he hopes his food will keep the narrator smiling. He tells the narrator to eat the food fast, and the narrator coughs up a lot. He asks if he always has to bring food with him, and he says he helps himself when his reactions are funny. He wonders if the narrator's heart is getting cold, and asks if there's anything he can do to snap out of this situation. He wants to know how he can take control of the situation, and if he can act without the permission of his superior. He can't do it without his permission, and as his subordinate, he has to do it as he says. He tries to make fun of his subordinate for being so formal, but the narrator says that calling him girl is too formal, and she'll have to get used to it.
