About This Chapter
In this chapter, we learn that the young narrator is waiting for the young man to return to the office. The young man, however, has already left the office and is now on his way home. He asks the narrator if he needs anything from him, and the narrator tells him that he needs something from him. The narrator then asks the man why he is calling, and he says that he is sorry to call him in after hours, but he was hoping that the man would come back to work. He then tells the man that he has asked him to do a reference check on the company's competitors, and that he will leave the man in the mock-up until he has completed the task. He also says that the market is a business and that market research is a part of that business. He says that if the man wants to do market research, he should do it on the day of the meeting, and then he will come back and finish the job he has started. He tells the narrator to grab some coffee and go home, because he is about finished with the task he has just started. The man is horrified to see that the narrator is carrying a remote control in his pants, but the narrator assures him that it is just a toy and that it will make him happy. He adds that if he can endure the task for ten minutes, he will grant him a wish. He promises to return once he has finished the job.
