The narrator tells us that he's surprised that the girl is so happy to be separated from her lover. He says that if she were him, she wouldn't have agreed to be apart for so long. He tells her that she shouldn't get into this "apology mode" , because she's not changed at all. Instead, he says, she needs to think about her feelings for him. If he had met someone else, he would have had a better life, she says. He's right.
