In this scene, we are introduced to the "shrewd boss" of the play, Mr. Roberts. He is a kind and generous man, who is very fond of his employees. He tells them that he has just returned from the hospital, where he had received a number of messages from his patients. He has heard that they were handling the messages by their own selves, and so he has come straight to see them. He thanks them for their hard work, and he promises to give them a reward when they return home. The boss is very kind to his employees, and they are very grateful to him for his kind words
