This chapter opens with a soliloquy by the Duke of Gu, in which he tells the audience that he is willing to sacrifice his life for the country. He says that he has killed one hundred enemy soldiers and will be rewarded with fifty taels, two horses, and bronze tiger armor for his valor. The Duke then asks the Lieutenant-General, feng-gong, to come up and tell him what he wishes for him to bestow upon him. He tells the lieutenant-General that he used his body to protect his jiuli' s bloodline. The lieutenant replies that he does not wish to receive the reward because he is ashamed of the mistake he has made. He explains that he was not able to capture anything due to his lack of martial arts and that he dragged the young lord down and caused him serious injuries. He asks the Duke to share the rewards with the families of those soldiers who died in battle.
