"My first lover" is the title of the first chapter of this short story. It begins with the narrator's description of his first love, a university student. The narrator tells us that he and the student have been in love for some time now, but that they haven't had much time to do anything together. They've been working all the time, and the two of them are worried about each other's health. They decide to go on a date together, but the narrator doesn't have the right clothes for the occasion. She asks a friend to help her pick out some nice clothes for her first date.
