In this chapter, we are introduced to a number of characters, each of whom has a different personality. One character is used to being alone, while the other is more interested in being part of a larger community. We learn that the child who loves being alone wants to bring in people, but that the other child is afraid of being alone. The child who likes being alone switches off the lights in the house, but the child that likes being with other people thinks that they are lost in the world outside. The other child realizes that they have been missing the other person more and more, and that they will never be alone again.
