The narrator tells us that the baby is the abandoned child of the general who was killed on the battlefield. The narrator says that the humans are upset with them for treating the baby so poorly. He says that as long as they treat the baby well, the humans will never hurt the baby. He tells the story of how he and his wife used their own lives to prolong the lives of someone they loved before they died.
